Assam Water Hyacinth Notebook
Water hyacinth known as Panimeteka in the Assamese language is an aquatic plant which can grow and reproduce freely on the surface of water or can be anchored in mud. One of the fastest growing plants, the water hyacinth is known for sizes varying from a few inches to a meter in height. Considered a weed that suffocates water bodies the world over, the plant originates from the Amazon basin and was introduced into many parts of the world as an ornamental garden pond plant due its beauty. Assam has an abundant resource of water hyacinth, which is used for making paper, fiber board, yarn, rope, bio gas and a variety of handicrafts.
