Sagol Kangei - Manipuri Polo - Print Only
The game of Polo has had a deep rooted presence in the cultural history of the state of Manipur for centuries. Traditionally known as Sagol Kangei, polo is said to have originated in Manipur in 3100 BC. The state plays host to the oldest Polo ground in the world, the Mapal Kangjeibung Polo Ground. Unfortunately though, the Manipuri Pony on which the game of Manipuri Polo is played is on the brink of extinction owing to rapid urbanization and encroachment on wetlands, leaving no ground for grazing. With their numbers dwindling, the future of the game is in peril.
