Meghalaya Living Root Bridge - Art Print Only

The living root bridges are among Meghalaya’s most striking examples of living heritage. Crafted from the intertwined aerial roots of rubber fig trees, they seem almost otherworldly yet they are entirely real. For centuries, the indigenous Khasi and Jaintia communities have nurtured these bridges, guiding the roots to form sturdy passageways across the region’s overflowing rivers during the monsoon.

Beyond their practical use, these bridges form a living ecosystem, hosting local flora and symbolizing the deep relationship between the people and their land. They reflect generations of indigenous knowledge, cultural identity, and harmony with nature. Under ideal conditions, a root bridge can endure for hundreds of years. Today, around a hundred of these remarkable structures are known to exist across different villages in Meghalaya.
