The Naga Jolokia or Raja Mircha is one of the hottest chilli peppers in the world. It is widely called Bhut Jolokia, which literally translates to ‘Ghost Chilli’ in Assamese & Bengali. They are cultivated in the Nagaland & Assam region of northeastern India. This dented, rough textured pepper is used as a spice as well as a remedy for summer heat, as it induces perspiration. Believed to have been named after the ferocious Naga warriors of Nagaland, the Naga Jolokia finds many other uses in the Northeast India. These include smearing the pepper on fences or making smoke bombs as a safety precaution to keep wild elephants away.
