The Naga Bhut Jolokia is one of the hottest chilli peppers in the world. It is widely called Bhut Jolokia or Bhoot Jolokia, which literally translates to 'Ghost Chilli' in Assamese & Bengali. The Bhut Jolokia is cultivated in the Nagaland & Assam region of northeastern India. This dented, rough textured pepper is used as a spice as well as a remedy for summer heat, as it induces perspiration. Believed to have been named after the ferocious Naga warriors of Nagaland, the Naga Jolokia finds many other uses in the Northeast India. These include smearing the pepper on fences or making smoke bombs as a safety precaution to keep wild elephants away.

A Naga male was considered a warrior because of his headhunting abilities. A warrior with a higher number of head-takings was considered exceptionally brave and enjoyed a higher social status. He was allowed to wear specific textiles and ornaments with markings and patterns that would proudly indicate his elevated status in society.
