Thangkas are religious scrolls found hanging in monasteries and in Sikkimese homes. These paintings in Sikkim have a religious and spiritual significance and are regarded as a sacred object. They normally depict life sketches of gods and goddesses in different forms especially the life of Lord Buddha, goddess Drolma (Tara), a wheel of life or any other deity. Thangka earlier was seen as a form of meditation, a means of communication between the artist and the deity which required years of practice and training.
