Loktak Lake at Moirang in Manipur is the largest fresh water lake in the North-east India. There are many small islands jutting out of water made of floating masses of vegetation, formed by an accrual of organic garbage and biomass with soil particles that have been thickened into a solid form called Phumdis. It is on these, that the world’s only floating National park exists, the Keibul Lamjao National Park, which is the last natural refuge of the endangered Sangai the dancing deer of Manipur. This ancient lake plays an important role in the economy of Manipur as it serves as a source of water for hydro power generation, irrigation and drinking water supply and is a source of many a Manipuri folklore.
